my f250 will only start for ab out 15 seconds then cut out. its a 89 f250 custom with a 5.0. i checked the fuel pump and filter and the only thing i can come up with is the control module.. could the control module cause this kind of problem??
The way to check is start it and let it quit with the hood open, at the pressure check Schrader valve for checking fuel pressure just push the valve in and if fuel shoots out that part is O.K., next plug a spark plug in to the coil wire at the cap to check for spark. Most likely if you lose fuel pressure and spark your engine computer has given up.
ok. thanks. i did check the fuel pressure. it was fine. along with the fuel filter and fuel pumps. i am getting ready to change the igniton control module. i was told it could be faulty. if not should i change the computer?
When it quits and won't restart, I would check to see if you have spark through the plug wires. If you have no spark, I would say either the coil or the PIP in the distributor. It could be the ignition control module, but usually when these go dead they are like most living things(dead for good).
That being said, I would first replace the coil. then I might try the ignition module next due to it's ease of replacement compared to the PIP in the distributor. Then the PIP.
This is if you do indeed lose spark when it quits and won't restart. Just what I would do based on my experience having owned several Ford vehicles of this vintage.
Every post I have seen with this problem have changed the Ignition Coil First with no change. I have yet to see anyone post that they changed the coil and it fixed it.
Maybe they just do not post when that happens but I have only ran into one bad coil and it melted down and it was on a 1938 Chevrolet back in 1952.
By the way fuel shooting out of the valve on the fuel rail does not tell you anything. You need 28 or more PSI for an V-8 and mot than that for a I-6 to start it. 25 PSI fuel will shoot out and not be enough to start it.
The year you are talking about I would guess the TFI first but if it had the remote mounted TFI (ICM) then I would say PIP sensor.
If you do not have spark unplug the EEC Computer and see if spark returns, if it does you may have a bad Computer but if it does not it is not the Computer.
Sorry, I have owned my 88 F350 460 since new, it has done the run and quit, when it was the computer it also had NO fuel pressure or spark, if it quit at an idle and you had fuel pressure by checking it the way I described in my other post you need to look for spark. When my truck lost spark it turned out to be the pick up in the distributor, most of the time this is what goes bad, my truck still has the original coil, rotor, distributor cap, wires and module, 220,000 miles.
He is talking about a 5.0 and it is common for the TFI to go out in these trucks.
You have a 460 and if I remember right the 460 has a remote mounted ICM (TIF) and not on the distributor. His TFI module is on the distributor.
I had an '87 taurus that would quit and would restart later, replacing the coil fixed it. I have also read of others with F series pickups of this vintage that replacing the coil fixed a problem like this, so I know it can be the coil.
I have had several ignition modules go dead, and as I eluded to in my post under No. 5 none of the engines would restart even after sitting for some time. I'm not saying the module can't come back alive, but it would be rare. I would probably replace the module before replacing the PIP, because it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a spare module anyway.

Considering the ignition module your truck has, the answer is...absolutly!
E43Z12A297A .. Ignition Module-Mounts on the dizzy (Motorcraft DY425)
Marked: E3EF-12A297-A1A or A2A / Used on myriad passenger cars, trucks and etc beginning in 1983.
This module is a NOTORIOUS POS! And has been for decades.
In fact, Ford after years of arguments, was forced by the NHTSA to recall FIVE MILLION vehicles around 10 years ago to replace them all.
Note: This module mounts on the dizzy using TORX headed screws. You will need a THIN shanked TORX driver to R&R it.
