Coil Spring Question?
Don't want to hijack but;
Are 1/2 3/4 & 1 ton front coils all the same on the 2wd trucks? I cannot find any specifics on them. I have a 460ci in my 74 s/c which obviously weighs more than the 6 cylinder some of these came with. seems odd to me.

Is your s/c F100, 250, or 350? And what is the front axle capacity (warranty plate or it's also listed on the paper cert. sticker on the door jamb).
I can look up the p/n for you.
Thank you,
-Rodney

There are three different pairs, depending on the capacity of your front axle.

I am rebuilding a vehicle that I found standing on blocks in the bush for 20 years and the front camber setup looks like a VW Beetle without the engine so I need to talk to my local spring guy about new ones to replace these stretched ones.
We don't necessarily have some of the spring data readily available here in Africa, so I would need to specify my needs. Thanks kindly

Be patient and one of the parts guys with the Master Parts Catalog microfiche will chime in soon.. likely ND, JEFFAFA, or Mike.
Thanks for your reply, I was awaiting a reply from the others before thanking you for your response, but so far nothing, must be away for Xmas . Mine is a RHD assembled in South Africa by Ford South Africa sometime 1974 or just after and the VIN plate layout on the door does not read like the US standard, although some of it is decipherable by checking the Vin plate vs Ford forum info , but it does not show front axle capacity only a Tare of 2005 kg (dry weight) , a Gross Vehicle Weight of 3400kgs so very little is is known about the build options except that it is a 1974 F250 Custom (base model) , no P/S, A/c, fan, heater,demister, just side feet vents and vent window for air. Ford's factory local factory records were not kept filed due to a partial pull out just after that time and today nothing can be found of that era.Much of the parts like rubbers indicate manufacture in Canada , I'm sure much was also sourced by Ford SA from the US at the time.
The VIN plate data mentions S&A, B&M; AX , Body Work 2J PE ( Port Elizabeth?), Serial number 37373, Sido Number , EIH Nr. 715654, Engine C,engine number 52449, Transmission N, R.Axle A, Paint ON, there is a sticker on the engine tappet cover which says May 1974, Series 300 engine and that's it.Occassionally on the front ally grill and other places I can find 1974 stampings. The underneath NP gearbox and Dana 60 diff number and ratio ID plates are clearly identifiable, also the engine number but absolutely no chassis number or axle load data stampings except for the data shown on the ally VIN plate.

My front coils on the '74 F250 300L 2x4 appear to have two pigtails, one each end, strangely. Because I'm going for a lower and softer ride I cant cut a coil off to try and level the truck chassis. I have however taken the two lower support leaves off the rear blade stack, which had seven blades , dropped the rear by by one inch, still have more than 12 inches of travel left.. The front travel between the rubber stops and the I-beams is 2.5inches. I am looking for improved cross axle flex to get the smoother ride and to prevent lifting of one rear drive wheel ( no LSD) to maintain maximum traction when I go off to the boondocks fly fishing .I also have no torsion bars, so cant rely on them to push the other wheel down. I'd appreciate any suggestions you have.Being in my 70's I don't want a struggle to get out of the boondocks, but I am convinced that with the right setup and careful driving practice I don't need a 4x4 vehicle.
Kind regards
