I have a 74 F-100 Ranger XLT. Recently, had a wire burn on the ignition switch so I rigged a temporary harness (no harness, just used clips and slices) and everything was fine. I got a wire harness for the back of the ignition switch from a junkyard and spliced it in - and got the original problem back. From what I can tell from the service manual, the wire to the battery terminal on the switch is what is smoking. I tore the insulation back and see that this wire is paired with another wire that is attached to the accessory terminal. Seems strange to me but I need to trace back and find out why things are smoking.
Where does this wire go? Anyone experience this and know what I should look for?
If I remember correctly I found a diagram on the web but don't remember where. Do a search until I can get back and see if I saved that diagram.
Wiring is a bitch.
I see other diagrams that show the run wire going to the ignition module. From how it acts, it seems too much power is being drawn across that wire. The ignition module looks original so maybe something in there is shorting out. Does that sound plasible?
