I've been searching for a 302 4V or a 289 4V to
put in my 66 F100 but the prices seem to be a bit on the high side.
I have always liked small block Ford motors but
there are many guys that say if I'm going to re-
motor my pickup why not think big.
Well I've found a 1985 F350 with a 460 4V in it
that needs a rebuild and is going for less than a
small block.
Does anyone know if this 85 460 is a 4 bolt main
engine? What is the approximate horse power rated at and if rebuilt stock will it be a gas guzzler?
I appreciate your input!
Pull up a chair Willie,
What engine do you now have in your truck? 352? 240 I-6?
If you want to do a cost effecient engine, you will need to stay in the family series that you now have, or you will have to change your transmission, driveshaft, and maybe other things.
If you go over to http://users.erols.com/wrljet/engines
you can get some help with your questions.
Hey John,
I currently have a 240-6 in my 66 F100. I just haven't had and luck finding a small block V8 or even a 300-6.
I eventually want to change the 3 speed trany to an automatic if I can find an automatic steering column.
I also want to put a taller gear, about 3:25 ratio in the rear end and figure I will need more horse power.
Do you suppose I could get some decent horse power with the 240-6 I've got?
I don't do any hauling or towing, just highway driving.
Willie, you now have stuck the axe deep in the floor. Stock Man, and several left coast guys are solid I-6ers. Some will put four barrels, and all kinds of goodies on the I-6. That just sends shivers up my my spine to think about that, what a waste. I just opened the flood gates and here they all come. I asked for it. hehehe
If I have my facts straight a 302 or 351W will hook up to your tranny, as is.
My 66 has a fresh 352 FE, C-6, 76 I-beams, front disks, power steering, and a 2.75 rear. All but the engine was swapped in.
You have several choices. If you can buy a donor up through 79, a 302 and auto would be a good choice, because the are more parts available for the 302 than any other.
A recent Mustangs and Fords carried a story about Ford sixes and what could be done to and with a 240; 300 were not favored due to its longer stroke. My first F100 was a 79 300 and I was not impressed with it at all. 289s are getting scarce since the last one was cast in early 1968 but 302s are fine and plentiful. If you go the V8 route, consider the 351W as it is also readily available. In order to move your 2 ton pickup, a 289-302 needs some modifications to raise its torque curve. The stock 351 already starts with alot of area under its torque line starting at 2000 rpm and up to 3000/3500 rpm. I too shudder at some of the alterations done to sixes and what is expected of them; I think I will stick to my small block V8s.
Sorry to disappoint John, but I think the levy will hold. I just rebuilt my 240 as you know....Bone stock! That includes the NOS bearings and rings mind you. Ah the sweet sound of the I-6. BTW, I don't go for that..."let's make my I-6 seem like a V-8" stuff either. And yes I know what a big block can do. I have one of those too. You can check out both of my trucks on my page.
