And also, my work truck has a manual transmission with more than twice the number of gears as the ZF-6. I don't mind shifting but I certainly don't miss it when I get into my F250!

You are right on every point really. But there is one HUGE point not stated that the manual wins. Maintenance costs.
for who? the customer or ford?
The reason they are pushing the manuals up into the higher models only is because their customers are asking them to. The folks who hire drivers, laborers, plumbers, etc.. drivers.. are coming up with lousy manual driving skills. they toast clutches, etc..
the owners don't want to be responsible for training (added cost and liability).
they asked ford (and chevy and dodge) to help them out.. the result is an automatic that has many manual features, that anyone can drive, and hardly anyone can screw up. the extra features range lock, gear lock are to solve specific problems..
but this all comes down to money.. fords customers are asking for help, and ford gets to reduce program (maintenance, repair staff training, part stock volumes) costs too.
they didn't do this just because its 2010 and they wanted to screw with their customers..

Aw, crap. Not this again!
Gastic3514, you have a good point on maintenance costs. I'll also add that purchase price is a bit higher.
Sam, you bring an interesting point that I haven't seen anyone mention before. Never thought of that!
And TexasRebel, I completely disagree! There are plenty of things autos can do that manuals can't, as well as things that both can do but autos do better! The one thing that manuals can do that autos can't is offer the driver full control...

i for one wont miss the manual going away..
it's like complaining about not be able to buy wind up starters anymore.. i prefer teh convienence of Auto's for day in and day out driving..
for certain vehicles (like sports cars, say) a manual is more appealing but in a truck i disagree..
which seems to be what most people think.. that other thread listed the % of trucks sold as manuals and it was REALLY low...

what is the % of manual trucks that didn't sell? I'm willing to bet 0%...they all sold.
what is the % of automatic trucks that didn't sell? just the population says it's higher...
If Ford only makes 10% of the trucks manuals, and they all sell...that says they are still in demand...just not available.
