I've had problems with my belts going bad in my truck way before they should be going bad and get a hell of a squeak in them, suspect that it is my tension-er it has one hell of a bounce to it while the truck is idling is this normal or not. Getting tired of replacing belts at around fifty to sixty bucks at a time

also make sure you are getting the correct belt with the right number of ribs and length on it. the parts store belt that was listed for my truck was wrong and i had to match one up. also with your tensioner moving around i dont think thats your problem. usually they seize up and dont move. its possible there isnt enough tension on it though. id check all your pulleys and make sure they arent loose and that they spin freely. your tensioner moving around makes me think a different pulley is the problem. like sam said how is the tension when you change belts? does it stick or move smoothly?
mine was when the pulley on the lower left lost it's bearings (pulley with the bolt thru the center of it into the block) I also recall there may have been some movement when my vacuum pump started going south as well.....
The tensioner moves smoothly when replacing the belt and doesn't stick, haven't checked the other pulleys when the belt has been off yet

When i switched out my altenator the new one was 2 ribs smaller and by the time i went back to the auto store my old one was already sent back so now im running a 6 rib chevy 454 belt that works just fine unlike most chevy products.
