If you are talking about an 85 Ford, F350 with a 6.9 diesel, there is nothing that will interchange from that engine to a cummins 290. A cummins 290 is a class 8 semi truck engine from the 50's- early 60's.
If it's a small cam 350 probably, but i'm not 100% sure. The 290s were odd *****. Still the 855 block, but not as readily upgradable as the other ratings. There is also an oil pressure change that took place at that time in production, dropping from the old of about 60+ psi to a max of 40 psi. The pressure relefe is part of the newer coolers.( as in big cam engines). Also as with many diesels they can be configured many different ways with thier accessories of which the oil cooler is one. Visual inspection will help greatly and of course more questions of knowledgable people( local heavy truck shop/mechanic?) good luck OBCB
They made small cam and big cam I,II and III 290s as well as big and small cam 350s
If they are big cam it should be cast on the block and normally on the CPL tag in front of the fuel pump
A good bit of parts will fit both
I should have stopped and thought for a minute but I just went off the information provided. Large truck forum, of course you are talking about a 350 cummins.
I've never heard of small cam, big cam 290's. Never heard of any big cam cummins until the later 350. 335 came after the 290 in the 60's. I thought the formula engines were the start of the high torque, low rpm group. I know the 290, 335, early 350's had quite a few interchangeable parts.
Drove my first 10 wheel dump in 66', 12 yrs old. Bought my first truck in 76. Still learning about the old stuff I guess.
