Was there any difference in beds from 73 to 79? If so, what? I have a 73 F100 and the bed is rusted badly and needed to know what year beds I could use. Also what year trucks had 352s or 390s in them. Thanks for any info.
Truck bed for 73-79 are essentially the same. The only change that I know of is that in 77 the square fuel doors added and the round hole was eliminated, which was a very good idea. I hate the round hole for fuel filling it always runs over the side when its getting full. The FE blocks stopped being used in 76 but some industrial engines were built into the 80's.
I know we are talking trucks here, but the 390 was introduced in the car line in 1961 as a high performance option. Tim is correct if he qualifies his statement to say that the 390 was first offered in the F-series in 1968. The problem in identifying motors is that you can't assume anything as original now since many of these bad boys are pushing 30 years old! I have some engine identification info on my site if you are interested.
Hi Charles,
The only thing in those years to beware of is some of the 76-77's with 33" frame width, these are just a little tighter between the frame and you might have a problen with mounting one from these years on the full width frame. Best bet is to measure between the box mounting bolts to make sure it will be a bolt-on replacement. Chuck P.
