Hi everyone, I'm new to FTE and was hoping for some advice. I'm in the market for a daily driver that's functional for hauling lumber etc., and fun & simple for casual wrenching. I've found a local '71 F100 with a 300 3-on-the-tree, and I'm wondering a couple things:
1. Are there any common problems with the bumpsides? (I just got burned when my '98 5.4 blew out spark plug #3...which I've discovered is common)
2. Common upgrades I might be wanting to make
3. Gas mileage estimates/enhancements
300 i six....rates rite up there as one of the best gas fired combustion engines ever made. The three on the tree is a good trany, but once the shifter starts to wear it develops alot of slop.A 4 speed swap is not difficult.
Bump sides are good soild trucks.
Check the cowl area for rust. (Look from under the dash.) May not be a repair you are willing to deal with.
Check the bed seams from the backside, especially, if the truck has been repainted. Very common area for rust, easy to cover over and will rear its ugly head by blistering the paint later on down the road.
I love my 71 longbed. 302 AUTOMATIC with ps pb and low miles. Great parts getter or to gocamping in.
Pull a trailer and nice looking. Watch for lower door rot also.
There are alot of real nice ones cheap now.....Bill
