Just another trans fluid question

I have a 01 F250 SD CC 5.4L Auto 2wd

1st - I assume the correct size I need is a 3/8 inch magnefine filter for the transmission.

2nd - Truck has 123k on it and has shudder in the converter. I was planning on flushing the old fluid out (because I'm not sure if it has ever been changed) and putting back Dexron III / Mercon in it (advance auto parts brand fluid). With a filter change.

3rd - I was going to add this to the fluid Life Automotive Products - Smart Blend Synthetics, Trans Flush, ATF Products

4th - Does the sound like a good plan of attack? Any opinions or suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance

I'm probaly not much help, but i've read on here somewhere that if the fluid has never been changed then flushing and new fluid added makes the tolerances greater causing the trans to fail. I am not sure of this maybe someone with more knowledge will key in.

New fluid has never hurt anything.

You can use Mercon V in your tranny now. I would since nobody is really "watching" the Dex/Merc stuff anymore. I also wouldn't add anything to the fluid. Not sure about the filter you're asking about...

Mercon V is approved for the 4R100 now. Ford discontinued the Mercon fluid and now approves Mercon V for use with all transmissions that called for Mercon fluid.

I've never liked transmission flush products. I like a complete fluid change and new filter instead.

Thanks for all the replies, when I said "flush" I meant pumping to old fluid out (complete fluid change) not using a machine or chemicals and changing the internal filter. The magnefine I was referring to is Filter, Inline filter Magnefine 3/8 lines * On Special: Bulkpart transmission parts

I have a 2001 F350, flushed oil, replaced inside fillter and added external filter like the one listed below. Used Mercon V oil, no problems. Trucks very happy with the care it received. The filter kit may not be the exact one you need but Summit has it, also have off brand ones that are cheaper.

With that mileage, you have a lot of "dust" packed behind your piston seals, that pushes the seals out tightly, and wears them down. Not a problem, as long as the dust stays put, new fluid will clean that out, the seal will fall back into its place, losing contact with the cylinder wall, and no more shift. If you know it has been flushed at least every 60,000, with a recommended 30K between flushes, then by all means continue to do so. If you do not know, do not perform a flush. Dexron V is the only fluid you should use in Ford electronic shifted transmissions, compatibility with the stuff used to make the seals in the solenoids is the only issue, Dexron V also incorporates a friction modifier to help the Torque Convertor Clutch engagement feel, that chatter is the clutch grabbing and releasing under partial engagement, that trans used a pulse width modulated strategy to apply the clutch.
A complete flush, using Dexron V will eliminate that shudder, if you do not, then simply add 1/4 bottle of friction modifier used in the differential and that will positively eliminate that shudder, with no danger to the trans. We started doing that way back in '94, and still works today with absolutely no problems.

Pumping that thing out works, in fact that is Ford's official method since they do not supply the machines. I loosen the return line at the cooler, and just keep adding fluid until it runs out clean.

That's an old wive's tale. Don't believe a word of it.
