rear spring direction

feeling stupid! I took the rear leafs off and shackles, sanded cleaned everything and you guessed it, the shorter leafs not drilled in the center so does the long side of the spring go towards the front or rear of the truck? '56

According to mid 50 catalog the long end goes to rear.

Most here will tell you that if you don't have their catalog to get one because it has a lot of information in it. Also get a shop manual.
