Question Rear Axel Squeak!!!

Morning Gentelman,

Got in the truck (134,000 Miles) this morning and as I drove up the street I heard a squeal from the rear axel. Not breaks they are new and I just checked them out anyway. It sounds the same at all speeds, I have never had a rear axel bearing go could that be it?
Also the sound went away when I drove about 200 yards or so. Then after I was parked at work for an hour I drove it and heard it again for a 100 yards or so and it is gone.
Seems like it squeaks when it sits for a while in the cold....

Should I check rear diff?
Any steps on how to check rear axel bearings and/or replacement instructions.

Thanks in advance

Scott

Moved you here to SuperDuty, have you checked the U-Joints in the drive shaft?

Since the noise is coming from the rear, raise the truck axle up on jack stands so you can rotate the drive line. Using a screw driver manipulate the U-Joint and look for signs of movement or rust from one of the bearing cups. I would not rule out the brakes, sometimes things happen. Check and grease your drive shaft slip joint if you have one, also the front drive shaft needs attention since you have it in the shop.

Well jacked it up got under it had someone spin the tires and the thing seems fine u joints didnt grind or anything. when I stuck a screwdriver in the u joint there was a tick of play where it enters the rear diff but nothing crazy. I think either it is road salt or I am uneducated on what a ujoint which is shot is like...the whole thing drive shaft and all has rust on it...Maybe I need to see photos I dont know.

Some things in life are meant to drive you crazy, a noise can travel and might not even be coming from the rear. Check & torque the lug nuts since you mentioned the brakes were done.

Thanks bill
I tried that, but they aren't el cheapo brakes. Actually el expensivo brakes... definitely a squeal that is is the axle or drive shaft somewhere. almost sounds like it only squeaks at one point in the tire revolution...also when the speed increases the squek is constant not faster like a brake pad or something rubbing...this leads me to believe that it is a ujoint or something in the rear diff area. Just dont know what I am looking at in the ujoint looks dry and clean to me and the outside has rust just like the drive shaft.

Have you checked your emergency brake pads to see if they properly seated?

sorry il09 i wasent saying you were using cheap breakes, more like " if you are using cheap brakes" is probably how i should have put it, anyway dry u joints usually squeak in a oscillating manner ( like the one point in the tire revolution ) but the squeaking frequency goes up with the drive shaft speed. also i would not worry about diff or axle bearings as they usually "growl" when gone bad. also, as khangmai mentioned i would look at the e brake assembly as a possable culprit, backing plate hitting something?

Take a look at the carrier bearing, it could be the culprit.

carrier bearings do not squeak when gone bad, they have a low frequency rumble/growl noise

Ah not always, I've had plenty of what I'll call squealers.

I didn't say the carrier bearing was bad it could be another source for the noise, I know this from having the problem on my fathers '03 F250 4x4 KR. We searched everywhere on the truck for the noise, front to back, finally found it by jacking the truck up and while on stands put truck in drive to about 15-20 mph we found the CARRIER BEARING was the source of the squeaking. A shot of PB Blaster quieted it down for an hour or two, it feels tight and no vibration but it will have to be replaced to end the noise. I hope this helps, Todd.
