Depending on your firing order, the two wires that fire right after each other need to be away from each other in the weiring loom. On my 351 5-6 on a 302 7-8 but check your firing order to see yours.
put new plugs & wires in today, truck idles better than I ever seen it, but under load it starts to miss at around 2000 RPM's
and no, I don't have a lot of money, so yes, I used Xact wires and autolite plugs (copper core)
did you do the timing as well?
btw, autolite copper plugs are considered to be the second best choice, just behind motorcraft. autolite makes both but there is speculation that the ones that say motorcraft on the side are made to slightly higher spec. anyway, nothing to apologize for.
I am going to assume the truck in question is the '87 in your gallery. (I would suggest putting the truck info in your signature so when the questions come up we know what year, engine, transmission, etc. you are working with.)
Base timing on truck's equipped should be within about 2 degrees of the timing listed on the catalyst decal under the hood. If you don't set timing according to the under-hood instructions the computer can't adjust properly during normal operation. This leads to premature plug failure and poor fuel mileage and performance.
Base timing is typically 8-10 degrees BTDC but I know guys run as high as 12 BTDC for performance sake. Don't take these numbers as gospel. Check the under-hood info and oly adjust base timing with the truck at normal operating temp.
ok ok, I'm an idiot, I dont know how to make a signature thing.
I also didn't know my truck has a computer, I wouldn't think a 4bbl needed one, and I'm not sure about the tranny, but I think a C6.
whatever the spark thing was, it figured itself out,
now for the back FIRE ing, the MPG's and of course the rear window
go into the user cp to setup your signature. use this area to give a discription of your vehicle. engine, tranny, tires, gears and any other mods you may have.
I am not familar with that brand of spark plug wire your using. ford 9mm wires work very well in my opinion. like mentioned make sure the wires are routed properly and not touching or crossing on cyl 7&8. what did you gap your plugs to?
Now I see why I don't have a signature; it says I need to make 25 posts in order to enable it.
Anyways, wires were routed exactly as the old set, (never had a problem before)
Gapped the plugs at .44 She seems to have settled down with the missing,
but still has a tendancy to backfire when letting off the throttle at highway speeds.
flames not near as big at they were. (only saw the reflection of them tonight)
87 Bronco (351W - 4bbl) all I have for an exaust is a flowmaster thar dumps out right behind the pass. seat area

Thanks for the help guys
If its an 87 its one of the very last carb'd Bronco's or its been swapped. Sorry, I assumed that being an 87 it would have been EFI since the vast majority are.
I suspected a dead cylinder. pulling the plugs, the one cloest to the glovebox did smell of gas. I thought that would solve the backfiring thing, but not so much.
I noticed a slightly higher speed at a given RPM, so I'm guessing she is firing on all 8. The exaust doesn't smell near as rich as it did. and she doesn't bog down on the uphill as bad as she did

the 5.8 didnt see efi till 88 model year for broncos or f150 etc...
If your having backfiring issues i would suspect 2 things. Make sure your timing is spot on with a light. you might also consider a carb rebuild or locate a good carb tuning mechanic.
carb rebuild is soon on the list (I bet the power valve is shot)
timing should be fine, but will be re checked in the morning.
many vaccume lines are off, and that will be addressed as well in the morning
