4speed automatic behind 400m?

Building me a older truck but wanting to install a upgraded 4speed automatic behind 400m 4wd. Building truck up from scratch. truck will be used for towing and highway and mountain running. Not extreme off-road. What is available and reliable. I have a C-6 but want 4speed auto. Thanks for any info.

Since the 400 uses the 385 series bell pattern, you are limited to the E4OD, which will require a $500 controller. You might be able to put a GM 700R or Ford AOD (beefed) in there, but an expensive adaptor would be called for.

you can use the controler from an early diesel,as these were mechanical and don't need the full controler for ignition and efi.you should be able to find these at an auto wrecker, and the wiring harness.

I have been wanting to do the same thing.....any more info on the diesel computer - I was concerned the shift points might be too far off. Do you need to change out the rear end too (for the V.S.S.)?
