Onboard air?

The 650 dash thread (nice job Clay) got me to thinking about what I would like to add to my truck now or in the future that might require switches.....
Now, I'm probably less concerned about the cosmetics of my truck than most of you, mostly because of where I live and the effort it takes to keep it looking good here, but there are a few items I'd like that are for pure practicality. I always seem to fall back as one of my first choices when thinking of upgrades to adding an air tank that will run a big FOGG OFF air horn, either a train, or big truck horn, and also run some air tools or impact wrench in a pinch. Anybody have any input on tank size, good location for it and/ or compressor that'd work well for this type of setup?
Hell, anybody HAVE this type of setup?

Cheers,

Here you go, this will give you a place to start. I think 10-12 gal of air reserve is enough for most jobs if you have a quality compressor.

Riffraff Diesel: Onboard Air / Horns

Nathans are the *****. I just can't afford them, lol. They cost more than the bumpers I want...

there's a couple of threads on here with pics of people's OBA setups, bigpoppapump I think is one. The best setup I've seen is in general diesel I think, search OBA or on board air using google limited to this site, you can't miss it.

[edit]: I edited myself and it still replaced all the letters with *, lol.

I have an onboars setup to run my train horns and occasionally help out someone with a low tire. In order to run an impact wrench or any other highpowered pneumatic tool you are going to need a pretty large tank that puts out quite a bit of air at 90 psi. There is not much room for a huge tank unless you remove the spare tire. My tank is 4 gallon i believe

On my bronco I used a York A/C compressor out of a volvo and a 2.5 gallon tank. It was right around 8.5 cfm and could run impact to change tires if need be. Heres a link to a setup most others run. York Compressor for On-Board Air

Thanks all, as usual good info to get me started. I'm gonna hafta restrict the budget on this project as new they are so expensive and the use I'll realistically get out of mine doesn't warrant $1000+. I know a few guys here who run dump trucks so will statr with them and ask where they all get used parts. Mebbe I'll come across a junker at an affordable price. 12 gallons was mentioned but also that that is a pretty good sized tank as far as finding a location for it. I wonder is some sort of lockable strap setup in the bed would work, with flex hoses and disconnects??? Anybody seen or done that?

Run 2 or 3 tanks. Easier to install and find locations for.

A-ha! Sounds like a weiner.....never even thought of it but used to see bundles of three or more tanks when I drove heavy rigs back in my youth.
Could prolly fit three 3 gallon tanks along the frame rails, eh?

Thanks Clay, nice horns btw. Just what I need for the taxi drivers here......

pics

here are some pics for you

These are pics of the compressor

Notice the two surpintime belts

Notice the altenator's new location

The pull you see with the shiny side out on belt #2 is the tensioner pulley for the compressor. If you follow the belt to the bottom of the picture you will find it is attached to the crank pulley.

The picture below is a picture of the heat exchanger for the compressor. Directly above it would be the crank pulley. The small lines with the loom on them is hot oil coming from the compressor, the other is going to the holding tank which is in the next picture.

The long rocket shaped looking thing is an air/oil separater. Because this is a rotory screw compressor a lot of oil is used in the process of making the compressed air, this unit separates them. As you can see there is a white filter on the outside (on the left side of the pic) there is also another filter inside, you can just make out the oil site glass in the pic next to the white filter.

There is also a control box with an hour meter, an over temp light and an off/on switch with a running light mounted in the cab on floor in between door jam and seat. If you need a pic of that I can get it tomorrow. If you have any more questions feel free to ask in this thread.

i hope this is what you were looking for

Yes, exactly what I was looking for. A detailed description and a good look at the compressor. Not sure I have the belts figured out but might ask a ? later when I've had a better chance to look them over.

Thanks.
