To make a long story short. Had to replace oil pan and in the process had to remove oil pump when the rod fell out. ??? which end goes into the dis. and which to the pump. Try dropping it in from the top, but it seem that steel washer was is coming off when dropping from top. Was just hoping that I do not have to remove pan and cut exhast sys. to go from bottom. Thanks in advance
The oil pump drive shaft is meant to be installed from the bottom. That washer or "lock" is to prevent the shaft from being dislodged when you pull the distributor. There is nothing worse than the feeling you get by pulling a distributor and having the drive shaft fall down into the pan. I personally recommend that this shaft is installed the right way: However, you can cheat and carefully put the shaft in from the top. You have to make darn sure it ends up in the oil pump. Failure to get this right will toast your engine if the shaft isn't able to operate the pump. I wish you well.
If you do cheat the shaft in from the top then take that washer right off and put it in your tool box for the next time the pan is down. The shaft is the same on both ends, so it can be put installed either way.
Boys, I could be wrong but it seems to me that you're going to end up doing alot more work than necessary to save a little work. Having done a couple of oil pumps on FE's it seems to me the easiest thing to do is drop the pan again. The way I change the oil pumps on an FE is cut loose the motor mounts, jack up the engine under the damper and put a 2x4 block between each perch and motor mount. Drop the pan. Once the pan is loose it will drop just enough to get to the bolts on the oil pump. Drop the pump into the sump, and slide the whole show out. Replace the drive shaft with the washer up toward the dist. and reinstall the whole show. The only cost involved is a new pan gasket and the oil. Takes about 3 hrs.
