Cool MotorCraft Oil

Has anyone been able to find Motorcraft 5w30 Syn-blend in the big 5 quart containers? I can find 5w20 Syn-blend 5 quart containers all over the place but can only find 5w30 in the quarts.

Angry

I'm beginning to think that the 5w30 is not bottled in the 5 quart jugs.

You won't find them. Been there.

They think they don't sell much so 5w20 is most popular selling so they make 1 gal.

With the exception of just a couple of gas engines Ford has retro- actively changed the oil specs to 5w-20 on the there engines. So it doesn't surprise me that the 5 qt bottles are only available in 5w-20. Mine works out pretty well I buy a 5qt save a qt when I do my 4 cyl. ranger then use a 5qt add the saved qt to make up the 6 qts. I need for the 5.4 in our e-150 van.

You did not mention the miles on your truck or if it uses oil between changes.
I have just under 200 k on my Mark VIII and still use 5W20 and it uses no oil between changes. I would recommend using the oil that your manual says to use, either synthetic or petrol. unless you have way more miles and a lot of wear on your engine.

I would recommend the 5w20. It works fine in all Ford engines, including the 4.0L The TSB Ford put out on weak oil pumps on some years only comes into play if you try to put a 0wXX oil in there. The 0w is just too light at startup and results in excessive bearing wear. Just use the 5w20 and you won't have any problem.s

What is your source of information on using 5W20 in the 4.0 Even Ford recommends against using 5W20. They told me that it was a No, no in the 4.0, it needs 5W30.

Walmart had a sale on the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 and they sell the Motorcraft oil filters. I just paid 22.00 for the oil it's usually 29.00

It's not Motorcraft but figured I'd give you guys a heads up on it.

There were a limited number of SOHC engines that had defective oil pump specs, resulting in low pressure with lighter oils. This problem only pertains to the SOHC engine. The older OHV and the newer DOHC in not affected by this problem. As for the source? Try your owners manual and compare the temperature chart found there to the temperatures you will actually encounter. If that is within the same range, then it is ok to use the 5W20. I recall seeing a TSB against using 0w anything in the SOHC engine. I do not recall where that notice was posted, I think it was some time ago on this forum. As I recall it had to do with a clearance defect within the pump.

I'm beginning to believe that this topic of 5W20 v 5W30 motor oil will fall under the category of religion, much argument with no real solution. I just read the below link to "Bob the Oil Guy" and at best I have concluded, for me....I will stick to 5W30 as I see no real benefit in changing what works. (If it's not broke don't fix it) Some real good points are brought up both Pro & Con.

First off that post is several years old and the oil specs they were referring to are not what is currently being produced.

On the other hand here is a section of the Ford specs from one of the posts that say the 4.0 engine needs the 5W-30 weight oil...

NOTE: THE "EXCEPTION 2001-2002 VEHICLES" SHOULD BE SERVICED WITH SAE

I agree with everything that you have posted. Even if there has been a changing of the Ford Guru minds that 5W20 is now an acceptable oil in place of the 5W30 I personally fail to see the benefit in changing unless you are located in super sub-zero temps. That and the fact that the 5W20 comes in 5Qt jugs. IMHO.

0W viscosity at start up is still thicker than a 20 or 30 weight at 100C/212F operating temp.

In Fords oil TSB 02-1-9, it excludes both the pushrod & OHC 4.0L from using the 5W-20 lube. https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...php?tsb=02-1-9

The problem is that the 4.0L never got an oil pump upgrade that allows it to be able to produce the needed flow, of the lower viscosity 5w-20 at the engines operating temp.

So the problem isn't with cold start up pumping/supply, it's with the pump not being able to produce enough flow with the 20 weight at hot operating temps.

Not saying our 4.0L engines are going to come unraveled if we use 5W-20, but over time & or under load, were likely to have problems, or Ford wouldn't have Excluded the 4.0L from using the 5W-20.

It's our engine, so we can pour in what ever we want, but I'm staying with 5w-30 in my 4.0L as Ford suggests!!!!

Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.
ACTION:

All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy. Testing has validated this viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be service with SAE 5W-20.

All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001 Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil. Vehicle Application Listing Approved For SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil
