does anybody know what fe stands for?chebbie boys try to tell me it stands for "finally extinct" but seriously, anybody?also why did ford put different beds on 4x4's up to 66'?are they a late 50's bed? why ?,fender:tire clerance?thanks.oleblue
thanks 390fe for the info i appreciate it.i like fe's some of 'em got me through some good and bad times,my buddie has a 84 f150 built unreal it has a 390 w\edel. aluim. heads,blue-thunder intake, and a police interceptor short block.it'ill pull the front tires!no kidding, and it's a 4x4.
I heard this cool legend when I was a kid that the FE was named after the chemical symbol for iron (Fe). They called it the FE because there had never been so much iron used in the construction of a single engine prior to the original FE. Just thought i'd share that with ya.
390, that's a good start. Edsel was one of Henery Fords sons. He worked on the new project introduced in 1958, and had the engine line and the car named for him.
i think what makes a motor better than others is that persons opinion,or memories of that 390 in that f100 they had years ago.i have owned several FE's but their so damm heavy!!,no offense but a 351w w\ a mild cam ,600 4bbl,good daul-plane hi-rise,elec.igntion will eat a 390's lunch!and weigh's alot less and looks kinda' cute sittin' in there.but i do have high respect for 'em ,needless to say,i am done with 'em. that leaves more for you all!,i geuss. oleblue=

For anyone who really wants to know what "FE"
stands for it's "Ford Engine" not Ford Edsel or whatever else was posted.
Damn Hoss, if you had been around here earlier you could have saved us all some trouble, hell we wouldn't have to had to look up stuff, or be tellin them damn lies.
well damn hoss,i geuss every ford engine is an "fe"? that makes no sense unless,it was the first v\8 after the flat head with overhead valves,a y-block 292 was the last before they stated putting in 352's.is fe really that simple"ford engine".a simple question with many answers, anybody want to confirm this?thanks
Hoss, sorry to tell you this but you're dead wrong. Its Ford-Edsel. It was originally developed as a 330 ci V8 for the Edsel in 1957. Production officially ended in 1976 though it was still made for some industrial (U-haul trucks) and marine applications into the early 80s.
