How much gear oil does a 02 explorer hold, wanting to change this weekend just need to know how much to pick up. And mobil 1 75-140 is what I need correct. Thanks
Which gears? Trans, T/C or differentials?
Differentials only require a fairly small amount. Just pull the fill plug and install until some starts coming out. If it's a traction lock, install the friction modifier first. The T/C uses ATF as does the trans.. Front diff. same as the rear, no modifier. 2 quarts should be plenty.
It's as I posted earlier, for a traction lock put the friction modifier in first, then add your gear oil until it starts to overflow and then button it up. 1 qt. of oil should be enough.
the 02, if it is a 4 x 4 has independant rear end. The axle pumpkin is aluminum and mounted to the body. THere is no steel rear cover to remove. you pull a big 1 inch plug at the bottom to drain, and a smaller plug several inches above to refill. Takes almost 2 quarts. The 75 -140 is correct. I buy a tube of the friction modifier to add even tho i dont have limit slip. I think the modified oil does a better job of lubing the gears and reducing gear whine.... I think the two plugs have square holes to remove. seems like the bottom is bigger than 1/2 inch drive. Think i used a 3/4 to 1/2 inch adaptor on the end of a 1/2 inch ratchet to get it out.??
