decent ball joints

afternoon,
I need to replace my ball joints on my 2003 F350 (both sides and upper and lower). I have been looking at ones from Rockauto (Moog, Acdelco) and also the set from Bronco graveyard (Dana Spicer). I want to install a good set since I have a 4 inch lift and 35 inch tires. I want something that is going to last. Has anybody used any of these or recommend others? Not to worried about price.
Thanks

Moog and Spicer will be the top brands. Moog is more readily available, carried by most parts stores should you ever have an issue with them. Moog is what I plan on using when I need to do mine.

I used moog in all of my past vehicles too and I sold them before they wore out.

There are many choices for ball joints, Moog and Spicer are quite good products. I've just replaced my Spicer ball joints with another set (40k miles) they are supposed to be a "better" ball joint but only 40k has me wondering. The next time I replace these I will be looking hard at XRF ball joints, they are supposedly easy to install and come with A MILLION MILE WARRANTY. I hope this helps, Todd.

I have NAPA premium ball joints. They are greasable and have a kevlar insert in them that carries the weight of the vehicle. They have a lifetime warranty and the guys at the store said they have never seen them come back.

Wow, 40K miles? I have 104K on my truck and I think it's getting near time to do the ball joints as I hear a clunk at times. Granted I bought it used w/ 62K and can't be certain these are the original ball joints. I'm waiting until spring and warmer weather to do them as I don't put too many miles on it since I got the new car(picked it up 4 Oct '09 and have 7500 miles on it now).

I have seen comments on here from time to time about the Moogs and questions about quality. Are they still USA made? Do they still have grease fittings? I may go with the NAPAs for the life time warranty when I get to doing them unless Moog can match that.

Yea, I too was surprised they only lasted 40k. The Spicers aren't greasable and according to my local 4x4 shop mechanic he has seen very little difference in longevity between greaseable and non-greaseable ball joints. He stated to me once the rubber seal gets torn/wears out that the joint is on its way out. I trust his recommendations and he is the only one I truly trust to work on my trucks if there is something I can't tackle. I will admit I'm getting pretty good at changeing the ball joints out.

I was looking at the Napa premium ones also, 1 mechanic that I work with swears by Napa products. That might be a good choice since i would not have to order the ball joints, just pick them up at the local store.

National brands you can pick up locally no matter where you might be is always a plus. Moog is currently a Federal Mogul line and I believe their quality and location has remained.

I used Moog and no problems. Next set will be the Napa brand. If I remember correctly the Napa ones are rebuilable because of the nylon or kevlar or whatever can be replaced. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They are not rebuildable. The Kevlar supports the vehicle, thus no metal against metal, even if you forget to grease them.

A couple of the guys at my local Napa have been there almost 20 years. They said they have not seen the premium ball joints come back, but have seen the lower grade come back for warranty.

How much are the napa premiums? All I see online is "ball joint, upper, front suspension, for $54 each. Anyone know if this is the premiums you are referring to? I'm looking at ones for my 2000 F250. Thx

Here is the parts list. The higher priced ones are the premium.

I have had problems with Moog tie rod end on my wifes Exploder. They didn't hold up for nothing. I replaced them at the same time I did the ball joints on it, as it had to all come apart and it had 100k+ on it as it was. I should have kept OEM as I have had to replace both Moog tie rod ends in under 40k. The ball joints still seem OK after 60k, but I do need to check them as there is the same noise from the tires coming back again as when they were bad the first time. Everyone swears by them, but my experience was not good on the tie rod ends. Ball joints are TBD. And this was an Exploder, not an SD.

FWIW.

Dave
