The unit in my signature line was making some rattling like noises when returning to idle, took it for a spin and some brief noise followed by a considerable drop in power and a big smoke show Now it starts and idles fine, won't rev past 2,000 or so, no more rattling noise, plenty of smoke and we have oil running out of the condensate drain hole in the muffler
Whats the going price on a turbo? Any special tools or tricks to replacement? Its in an E-450
i believe a stock turbo is around 1000 bucks, go to [url]www.partsguysed.com, you can buy oem parts for alot less, the 1000 dollar price is at this website, and installation should be a couple hundred
Thanks for the suggestions. This is on a school bus, its got to go and I need to get r done and move on to the next project so I don't think I will fool around with a used one.
Local sources quoted $1050 for reman. and $1300 for new, my gut tells me for $250 differance to go new, decisions, decisions.
Of course this is one of them hydraulically actuated variable pitch impeller units. Just thinking the new one may have some desireable design updates and the condition of my core would be a non issue.

Not hydraulic actuated, electric pwm and its on the exhaust side not the impeller
I know that this is for an E-450 bus, but when I see $1300 for a new turbo I instantly think that $1400 for an Industrial Injection Stage I would be in my future. Especially for only $100 more. Now again, that would be the route I'd go in my F-250.
I disconnected the exhaust outlet pipe this morning just to see what I could see or feel. Shaft is apparently broke as I can flop the exhaust side turbine wheel all around inside the housing with my finger, so its time to get a turbo of some sort on order.
Tell me about this "Industrial Injection Stage I" turbo?
You could probably find quite a few other threads about this turbo, but those who have used this turbo really like them. If my memory serves me right, the stage 1 turbo has some modifications to help the oil reach all the necessary internals. I also remember reading that this helps minimize coking of the turbo. It has a larger compressor so it flows more air which helps drop EGTs (about 150-200 degrees). It is still a VGT turbo, and I think it is a modified 6L turbo. I would call or email Eric at Innovative Diesel and I'm sure that he could answer some questions because he sells them. It's been a while since I researched this turbo, but I remember making a mental note that this will be the turbo that I go with when mine goes out again after the warranty is expired.
Got the turbo swapped out today, because its in a cutaway van chassis the exhaust hookups and the backside wasn't too bad at all. The front side.....well my hands sorta look like I was trying to give the cat a bath
As I rolled the old turbo around it looked like there was a part of the hydraulic actator valve rolling around in there which led to the bent vanes and broken shaft, don't know where else that part would have come from.
