I have a `75 f250 4x4, the front axle is a Dana 44, and has the old style closed knuckles, the parts house tells me it has bearings, in there. They are really worn out, is it really hard to get apart?

It is not hard to get that assembly apart...going back together is another matter. This is not for the faint of heart and would require quite a bit of explanation. If you are mechanically inclined then I'd say you should be able to handle the job. However, your best bet is to review a manual for the recommended procedure. If you then have specific questions then I'm sure someone can sound in. Good luck.

hey i'm sureyou know what your doing, but check your wheel bearings out.somebody i know told me he thinks he needed 'em after i told him mine were shot.so i go over there and we jacked it up and sure enough the wheel was loose. but as you probably know the knuckle wasn't moving just his wheel.he already had the felt seals and gaskets ordered from ford.by the way is the only place you can get them.but you can get the bearing at the part store.2 bearings per side.anyway he just had bad wheel bearings.not your question huh!true story though.oleblue=

I got it apart, there was nothing left of the bottom bearing. The bearing shop has new ones and the races. How do I get the bottom bearing to stay in place? If ford is the only place to get the seals, why did they tell me they were discontinued?

The shims are used to set the knuckle bearing preload. Torque both top and bottom bearing cap fasteners to 30-40 ft lbs on a dana 44. With the tie rod removed, Put a torque wrench on one of the top bearing cap fasteners. Use the torque wrench to rotate the knuckle from left to right. The force needed to rotate the knuckle is your bearing preload. The torque reading should be between 5-10 ft. lbs. If you have a lower reading then you must remove a shim(s) to decrease bearing clearance. If you have a higher torque reading then you must insert a shim(s) to increase the bearing clearance. Shims are available in .003", .005", .010", and .030" There is no way to know what combination you need except through trial and error. I hope this helps.

Thanks that helps a bunch. Would I need to go to ford to get some more shims?

Dave:

Not sure if parts place will carry these or not. I would imagine that any drive train shop like "Universal Joint Sales" might also have them assuming they are near you.

While were on the topic, my grandpa has an old jeep with the same style knuckles, from what I can tell they are exactly the same. The reason I ask is, JC Whitney has the seals for $15 a kit, for a jeep.

Yes I got some from Ford and they had them in stock, this was the same place I called and they said it had been discontinued and my best bet was to buy one of there new trucks. But like I said before, JCW has ones for a Jeep, for $10 for BOTH sides, Ford charges $36 a side.
