I have a 79 F150 Supercab. I just put a rebuilt stock 351M w/C-6. I was told by the previous owner that he changed the rear end due to burning it up when pulling heavy loads. I don't know what rear end the truck has. I bought this truck to replace my 85 F150 302 FI w/AOD, It wouldn't pull my 27' travel trailer on flat land. Will my 351M pull my trailer, even through hills and mountains? I'm in Germany and it will be 2 years before I get back to the states. Thanks. Jess.
jess, the 351 is a bigger engine, and by it being an M indicates 4X4 (you may have 2X4) if so it will be geared lower than the 302 with OD, which most likely was geared very high.
Your gas milage is going to suffer greatly, with the new rig, but should go happly up hills.
BTW The 302OD should not be used in OD when pulling a load like that.
Men like to have a truck to pull a load like yours, with no strain. Total milage 600-1000 per year in this use. The rest of the year say 19,000 miles, they bounce around in a truck with a towing package getting 5-8 less mpg just to pull that hill without down shifting.
