I have a 2000 F-150 4x4 with 90,000 miles with a major amount of rust in the under carrage, some of it is very deep. Does anyone know if this is a common problem in this truck? The truck has spent its whole life in N.Y. and I purchased it in 2001. I have taken good care of it, frequent washing, oil changes on a regular basis, all that I can do to keep a truck looking good and functioning properly.
Another problem is that with 90,000 miles it is slipping in reverse, feels like I am on ice. i recently changed the trans. cooler lines( rusted right through) and freed up the vacum device that engages the front axel as well as the mechanisims that are associated with the trasfer case ( both those things were probably from lack of use in 4x4). Any info, I am all ears, Thanks, KEVIN
Sorry to hear about your issues. Ny winters take a toll on vehicles, vespecially with all the salt they use. My buddy has a 2003 Dakota and living in upstate NY the undercarriage looks like that of a 25 year old truck (very rusty).
you could have a reverse clutch issue.sometimes the reverse bushing wears down and allows the drum to make contact with the pump support and it causes the sealing rings to stick ,this causes the clutches to not apply fully and causes a slip.
Thanks for the info on the possible trans. prob. I do not know what any of that stuff is, but I get that something does not jive the way it should. Is there anything I can do to correst the problem aside from tearing my trans. apart? Thanks , Kevin
