Hi all, I've been wanting to buy a F-250 diesel 02 or newer for some time. I’ve seen commercials on TV talk about repo cars & trucks, police impound cars and truck that go up for auction. I’ve called all the police departments around me and none of them have a clue of what happens to the cars after impound or were to find the auctions. I would rather just go and buy a new shin one, but the Marine Corp just doesn’t pay that well. Any info on were to find this auctions or a good deal would be greatly appreciated. thanks Sgt Masters
My only caution is if the owner couldn't pay the loan how did they pay for any maintenance or even care about maintenance on the vehicle. A lot of those ads make you pay for a "list", as for the auctions every municipality has auctions every month or every few months that sell their old vehicles and any unclaimed impounds. Repo's are usually sold by the bank or go to wholesale auctions that require certain dealer qualifications to attend.
Not sure where you are located but these people search wholesale auctions and dealers for any vehicle you want them to and can get very good prices:
I'm in Jacksonville NC. I now there are good and bad sides of doing it this way. I've tryed saving up for a good down payment on a used one. but it never works out. My plan is to take some tax refund and look as hard as possible. Its just the were to look part. thanks every one.
How much do you think you'll save by going to this auction? Remember used car dealers go to these auctions as well, so look for them to bid on a good vehicle and bring the price to within a grand of what you can find it for on a lot somewhere, or likely about the same price you'd pay if you found a private seller wanting to get rid of it. Sometimes these used car dealers find a steal at an auction and are then willing to make a deal since they don't have a lot invested.
If you go the auction route, you'll need cash. If you've had a problem saving a down payment, do you think you'll get enough cash from a refund to buy an 02 or newer diesel? If so, they must pay a lot more than they used to
99 - early 03 had a 7.3 diesel motor. 03.5 - 07 had a 6.0. I'd scroll further down on the main forum listing page and read into some of the known issues with each truck. Start a new thread in each of those sections asking about the weak links on the trucks. Each crowd will tell you there motor is better than the other, but that's to be expected. Some of the 03 - 04 trucks had issues with the new motors and were problem childs.
i buy at salvage auctions, and reposesions come up all the time, you can look and buy at Copart auto auctions there is a public section there but i always expect the worst when i buy and bid accordingly. Reposesions are usally beatup and treated poorly. my advice is to get preapproved for financing and buy from an owner not a dealer or a auction.
Last month I bought a '01 F250 from the Federal Government through the General Services Auction website: http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/gsaauctions/. You can search their website by State.
The truck I bought has only 81K on the odometer, has been very well maintained, and drives great. It has a few cosmetic flaws, like a split seam in the seat which I am getting fixed tomorrow. I got what I think is a great deal and am very happy with the truck. Dealing with GSA and the guys at the Fremont National Forest, who had the truck since new, was easy.
If you are looking for a highly optioned Lariat, GSA probably won't be the place to look. Mine is a XT regular cab 4X4, 5.4L, 5-speed stick, 4.10 posi, off road package. It has air, tilt, cruise, but few other options.
