Saw my first clunker in the pick n pull type yard here. It was an 87 f150 with the 300. They apparently ran glass mixture through the oil. Was a warning sticker on the valve cover.
I was able to get an alternator and a fan clutch off it. So that part of the program worked. But just hated to see it done in like that. Truck was in fair shape.
I've seen a few of those here too. It's sad to see it happen, especially since they're still good engines. Not sure why they have to destroy them.
Fortunately, the external stuff is still good.
A/B:
Thanks for the dope slap. I needed to be woke up from the anger/sadness of this abomination. Just in my mind's eye - a '63 Ranchero in AZ or somewhere, going thru the process of crimpin, crushin, glass shatterin... "Why?"...
"Proof" of the ill-reversibility of the murder, so da guy can get the 'govment' cash. In-fact all the other parts can still be sold off, as U found out. Some folks (Calif I think) in the past, had formed a syndicate to offer cash for older vehicles (when the pollution laws ratcheted up again) to buy these/our old buddies to keep them from the crusher. This 'round' is not new. There's experience on both sides (govment/drivers). Why not talk w/each other - try to get something in place B 4 the next round of destruction?
Suggestion: talk it up here till some steam is built up, then use my OTHER contact info (C sig below) for each interested party to share their own w/other parties to organize more solidly?

Reason: additions
Yes it is sad, at my local pick-n-pull we have one huge section devoted to them there was a 2003 f-150 5.4l and a 1993 f150 4.9l with under 90,000 miles I wanted to cry.
heck if I know, it had coc on the windshield and 4 empty bottles of caustic in the bed. I thought they had to be like 10 years old but I guess there were people taking newer.
Wouldent cutting the frame be easier and better for the enviorment? Running caustic in an engine is so much better.
The funny thing is the EPA makes us nutralize the caustic that we use at work. You dont want a friggen misquito to die because are filters need boiling out.
No they had a list (hope I'm not on it next) & alot of it had to do w/mpg B 4 a certian yr (like last yr?) and the rest, like U said, were just "too old" =0 . (UhOh...look @ my sig. Wish I could get my "avitar" on here for you to see - she looks brandy new).
Chrlsful your avatar is working for me. the reason they didn't want to just cut the frame is because then the motor would still be usable. But I know of more environmentally friendly was of killing a motor than caustic. I.E. fun ways like putting a bullet through the block or dropping a grenade in the bore, but NOOOOO they just had to go take all the fun out of it.
[Highjack] Well you can get me with one of those IOU's by giving me your opinion on my last post of my thread Rebuilding an '85. [/Highjack]
Back on topic so I'm not a complete terrorist. I still want to cry when I think about that '03.
