Funny problem after disconnecting battery

Hey there, I have kind of a weird problem. The other day I replaced the battery in my 95 bronco and go to start it and no go. I thought maybe its the alarms immobilizer but found out it cuts power to the starter and not ignition. It cranks and cranks with fuel (I can smell it very strongly) and what appears to be good spark. I am stumped, is it possibly the ignition module may be at fault? It appears to be original but why would it all of a sudden go bad from replacing the battery. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Welcome to FTE. I'm sure everyone will do their best to help you.

My first guess would be grounds. On my '94 the pigtail ground off the battery connects to a ground post on the fender along with two wires. That post was turning in the fender and the nut was not down tight creating a loose connection and intermittent dying. I ended up making a new ground next to it with a bolt.

Maybe the starter relay isn't working anymore, it's a common problem, try jumping it by making a connection between the two bolts that come out of it and see if the engine turns. If if does, then the relay is gone.

Thanks for the replys! The engine is turning over with spark I even tryed liquid start with no go. I am definatly positive it is an ignition problem but It has spark at all the plugs. Whether or not it is a strong enough spark im not sure. Do you think the ignition module may have just gone bad when I finished replacing the battery? It would be weird but im not sure what else it could be.

Ok I have narrowed it down to a weak spark. I went to check the timing and the light wouldn't pick up the spark very well. I am just wondering what would cause an all of a sudden weak spark, could it be the ignition module or the coil. The truck was running great the day before.

It was just the coil, its running like a top now! Fairly cheap fix too.

Sorry we weren't able to get you more info faster. Glad you got it fixed. Any electronic device with a coil in it is subject to sudden (and apparently without good reason) failures. Alternators, ignition coils, any sensor with a variable resistance coil inside, blower motors... they all fall into the category of "coils" and unfortunately can fail with no warning.

Yeah I was too quick and needed this thing runnin again! No doubt about coils, I cant beleive it died right after disconnecting the battery, weird.

It could have had a weak coil that would have held up for many more miles and the inrush current killed it when you reconnected it. Hard to tell.
