new problems

I was goin to detriot today the check eng light came on. The truck was bucking so i thought it had to be a miss. The check eng would flash for 30 seconds and then stay lit. The check engine light would flash when the truck would buck/vibrate bad. Took it to autozone once i reached detriot. They plugged in a scanner and it had nine codes coils 1, 3, 5, 6 are bad and both banks are throwin a lean code. Funny thing is i replaced coil one yesterday. My question is would these "bad coils" make the truck run lean? Or could it be a bad fuel filter make it run bad? Havent changed hte filter and it has 60k on the odo. If so how do you change em? I also forgot to add, if you go over 3,000-3500 rpms the truck starts to buck/vibrate and you cant go any faster

3500 rpm's is about where the rev limiter is, thats probalbly what your feeling. Who told you all those coil packs were bad? Don't tell me the parts guy, he's ASE certified to sell you parts, no diagnose cars(there's a difference). Bad coils aren't going to set a lean code either. You could have a partially plugged fuel filter that is causing low fuel pressure. You could also have a vacuum leak somewhere causing multiple misfires. Dirty MAF could also cause both banks lean.

what were all the codes they pulled?

I don't know exactly what rpm's it hits it, but i do know it's not as high as alot of older vehicle. especially if the truck is in park.

Yes, in park and neutral the engine is limited to around 3000 to help protect the convertor. Most automatics are actually limited to between 2000-2500 rpm. But only in neutral.

Im not saying that 3500 is my rev limiter. Im saying when im drivin my truck and rev it to 3500 it starts to miss an vibrate/bucks. After it hits 3,500 it wont rev higher. It kinda feels like its runnin outta fuel lol. Its an 06 5.4 xlt ext cab 4x4. BTW once it starts to buck/vibrate at that rpm, MOST of the time the engine light will blink.

Codes are:

PO171
PO300
PO301
PO305
PO306

Pending codes are:
PO171
PO300
PO305
PO306

I bought a fuel filter yesterday, as it was a cheap thing to "knock" out. I tryed takin it off and i cant get the thing off. Does anyone have instructions on how to take the fuel filt off? Wilber15, the guy at autozone told me the coils were bad after he read the code. He also sprayed Carb cleaner all over the intake to see if it would rev higher to rule out a vaccum leak. It never reved higher. So i guess that would rule out the vaccum leak? I would like to get this truck in somewhat runnin condition because i am trading it in tomorrow on a different ford truck. The reason why i went to detriot is because I wanted to see what i could get for my truck at the dealership where i found the ford truck i wanted. And when i got their in was running good. And since i am possibly trading it in tomorrow I dont wanna drive back up their with my truck runnin like crap, plus they wont be happy because when i left that dealership yesterday, it was runnin good.

If this link doesn't work, go to the article section and search for fuel filters. Step by step instructors and pictures of how to replace.
Replacing The Fuel Filter 2004 And Newer F150 Pickups .: Articles

So if you just replaced your fuel filter- is it installed backwards? Sometimes codes will be set for other reasons, I would disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to clear the pcm and any codes and start fresh. Also, carb cleaner is not good for the maf, so hopefully he didn't screw something else up.

Good luck, I know the feeling, I just spent $300 for my airbag lite and now my 4x4 won't engage and I'm trying to trade my truck in as well!

Hey, Matt! Looks like I got here a bit late!

The lean condition is causing the misfire codes, not the other way around so that's where I'd start. Having misfire code(P030X) does NOT mean you have bad coils. If you see only one cylinder is the culprit (i.e. P0302) then the coil and plug are a good place to start. But the chances of all of them going bad simultaneously are somewhere between slim and none, so it's pretty safe to rule those out. Especially considering the fact that you don't have that many miles on the truck.

Good call changing the fuel filter, a cheap way to rule out a common problem.

My best guess is your MAF sensor. I'd try cleaning it off and seeing how it runs.

Good luck!

Dang, if you go back to the 2nd post of this entire thread....I think I stated everything that has been mentioned. An spraying carb cleaner no longer works for finding a vacuum leak unless it's a big leak. The computers are so sophisticated that they can detect a leak that spraying car cleaner will not. You need a scan tool to find the leaks.

I would still clean your MAF, as you may have dirt or a bug stuck to the sensor. Inspect all vacuum lines and hoses on the engine for damage or a line that has come unhooked.

Fuel pressure(failing pump) could still be a concern that a new filter will not fix. P0171 is Bank 1 lean, but your getting misfire codes on Bank 2 as well, so that pretty much eliminates a failing O2 sensor.

Yeah...ya might not wanna mention that one! Will be fun comparing against a 6.0 though...

As I stated above, I'd start with the MAF sensor. Let us know how it works out!
