Cooling Fan conversion to electric

I have a 78 f250 with a 460 for motor. I want to put an electric fan on it so was wondering if there was a certain cfm fan i need to stay above. It is an automatic tranny with tranny cooler in radiator.

Many people have tried it and many people have failed. That engine is too big and produces too much heat for an electric fan, even the biggest, to be effective. Even the fan manufacturers don’t recommend it. I have seen a few setups using electric fans that seem to be ok. They do use some fairly extensive sealed shroud systems to push as much air thorough as possible. You might do a search to find some ideas and pictures. Be sure and post the results of your venture. (Especially if successful)

first id like to say i do not have a 460 so i have no experience with one, but i did put an electric fan on my 302 and not only did i notice a dramatic increase in cooling it also helped with heat up and add what seemed to be a good bit of HPs. so if it can be done i recommend it.

I run this. It is fairly expensive but cools at the track and on the street equally well.

I'd check out an electric fan from a lincoln mark VIII. Do some research but they are supposed to pull more than any aftermarket fan, but they also have a large amp draw. So make sure you wire it up correctly with a heavy relay and correct wire size.

I also call BS. The lincoln Mark VIII fan will cool a locomotive. A 2 speed fan that pulls 4000+ CFM on LOW! 5500+ on high, which is never needed.

On low the fan cools my 505 horsepower 428 perfectly fine, stop and go traffic 95+ degree heat.

Boy you guys are sure in a hurry to holler B.S. at me. I was trying to be positive and tell IHF250fireman to do some research on the fans. I tried to research electric fans and was given all no’s from everybody I talked to. None of you have stated what you tow. A 460 towing a 7k plus trailer produces a lot of heat and I have been advised by many people in the towing community to stay away from the electric fan because they wont cool properly when towing in desert heat. I have had so many failures with fan clutches over the years that I would love to convert to electric. As far as the ford muscle thread, I thought it was interesting. They seem to think $285 for an electric mark VIII fan is pretty expensive. You will spend that and more for an aftermarket fan that puts out a lot less cfms’. So if you are going to do it and do towing the Lincoln fan would be the best unit. Good luck in your venture and as I said before be sure and post you results. I would be interested in seeing how it works out.

i run a 4 core super cooler rad,and a flex fan. i also have an auxillery pusher electric fan that is on a switch, for those really really hot days when im stuck in gridlock traffic. the engine is a 428 scj, with a big lift/duration cam,headers,3"dual exhaust etc.i run the temp at 175 degrees. that may seem cool to some, but my truck is propane injected,so it tends to run hot under the hood. i haul a 38 foot tri axle enclosed car trailer that weights 12,000 lbs. a combined total rolling gvw of almost 19,000 lbs.through the rocky mountains in the hot summer.i feel you can always heat an engine up fast... but it is harder to cool it down once it gets hot. a hot engine will cause excessive wear, more than a cooler engine. just my opinion.

I would be interested in doing this as well, I asked about it some time ago and got a negative response here. I would think it can be done and would help with hp, and even fuel economy, but I haven't had time to look into it.

The Lincoln Mark VIII will more than do the job, but not by itself. How is the rest of your cooling system? Hoses & rad in good shape? Been flushed recently? How is your electrical system, do you have the stock alternator or one that will support the fan? How do you plan on running it, electronic controller or big relay and switch?
The Mark VIII is a great shrouded electric fan but look at the whole package if thinking of converting.

Definately need to upgrade to a 3G alternator for the Mark VIII fan. The fan will pull 90 amps when starting.

I know this is off topic, but what is the "3G" alternator? Also, what are you guys (the ones that have this set up) using to install the Mark VIII fan to the radiator with?
