I have a 73 Ranger witha 390,C6 and under half to full throttle it makes a loud noise that sounds like metal slapping against metal. It will not make the noise in park only when in drive. It sounded like a bracket or something had came loose but everything seems fine and tight. The noise started on one day last week and hasnt gotten any better or worse. No noise in idle or park when you goose it but only in drive with halk to full throttle. Oil pressure doesnt change and drivability doesnt change whem it make the noise. Could it be the tranny? It sound like its coming from the passenger side of the motor but then again , Im in the cab so I guess it could be comimg from somewhere else. Thanks in advance.
It may well be the transmission, but if driveability is not affected then it is likely something simpler. Perhaps a loose flexplate or torque converter, driveshaft or u-joint. Also check your motor and trans. mounts and the cross-members. No substitute for cover-alls and a light while nosing around underneath.
Thanks stockman, I kinda thought it was probaly something in the drive shaft or tranny but Im always looking for that easy fix or miracle cure. (never gotten one though) Guess Ill have to buy new batteries for the flashlight and put on the thermal coveralls cause its cold out there.
B F H . Big F@#%^&* Hammer ! Now for your problem. Could be the rearend,If a tooth is chipped it will make a rapping noise under load but quiet when coasting Also could be bearings or u joints will have to check . Try revving the engine when in neutral .If it rattles it could be rods. How about reverse? .If its in the trans it will probably be the thrust washers getting worn
