Well, it's turned very cold here in the north and that usuaully brings out the problems like nothing else can=( Recently, I've noticed that my ABS light stays on after starting when the vehicle has been sitting for a few days without being run. The roads are ice covered and slipperry so it's easy to tell that with the light on the ABS doesn't work, brakes are just like regular brakes. If I shut the engine off and restart it the light goes out and the same braking test reveals the ABS working as it should. So what could be causing the light to stay on after initial starting? It seems like the the initial starting "test" is finding the ABS in a fault state, thus the light. If I use the vehicle everyday like I usually do, there is no problem with the light or operation of the system, but let it sit a couple days then the problem shows up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff S.
If the system works properly after resetting, right now that suggests it's an electrical problem, like maybe low battery voltage thats confusing the system????
Is the engine cranking slower than normal, which would suggest the battery soc, or maybe the battery cables or their connections might not be up to snuff like they need to be in cold country????
If you know all that is ok, maybe have a look in the "Tech Info" thread & scroll down under Brakes, for a "how too" on pulling ABS codes & post All of the code numbers found.
Or if you don't want to do that, run this pupppy by a brake shop that has a scantool that'll access & scan the ABS computer for trouble codes & post what they find & or pick their brains for ideas & post them, bet they've seen the problem before.
They'll likely charge for the service though.
Thanks for the reply PawPaw. The engine cranks over real well. I put a new battery in the Ranger last early spring so that seems to be working like it should.. I'll look at the stuff you suggested to read and get back to you on codes if I can find any.
