Does anyone know if the 351-400m engines are supposed to have an "oil slinger" installed on the crankshaft right in front of the crank timing gear? While changing out the timing chain & gears in my 400 I noticed it did not have one.
I have gone thru a number of 351C type motors of the 1971-1973 vintage and they all used the slinger. (it looks like a thin stamped steel washer with a bent edge)
thanks, Rick

I have a 400 also. Ford, for some reason put oil slingers in the passenger car 400 & 351m's. But they didn't in the truck engines. Why ask Why? Also a lot of passenger car motors had about a 3/4 " water pump spacer. again, Why ask Why? Not knowing for sure what my motor came out of, I put it together like the truck set up. No water pump spacer, or slinger. I have about 2500 miles on it now with no leaks. I also highly recommend fel-pros premium gasket set. It came with a ford rear seal, and rubber valve cover gaskets. I would recommend you to get the front seal from ford.

hope this helps.

I guess I should have read a little closer. You wont need a full gasket set just for your timing chain change. ooooppps.

thanks for the info Travis, I'll probably just stick it back together just like it was with no slinger.
