Shift cable issues...

Shift cable issues...
We've had some "noisy" shifting for awhile in our 01 Escape. (5 speed.)
She calls me yesterday and says she can't get into gear...she's stranded.
After a few HOURS of picking up little ones and delivering to wherever they needed to be, she and I return to the down Escape...I put the hood up and she started operating the shift lever...
The flippin cable FELL OFF!
Apparently, the paperclip that holds the cable onto the transmission has worn out.
Don't you just KNOW that is going to be a dealer only part???
Today is Sunday. No dealer. I'm thinking of custom fabbing a "stronger" paperclip out of a cotter pin or some such nonsense to hold the cable in place for a few days until I can get the right part...any ideas?
