Hello, when my 4x4, 04 Expedition is in 2 wheel high, it sometimes makes a short duration "clanking" sound (like I'm dragging soda cans underneath it) and then a "thud". The noise never occurs when it's in AWD, or 4H or 4L. Any ideas what it could be?
My first though would be bad/worn u-joints on the rear drive shaft. When you engage the front axle even momentarily, the slight binding will take any play out of the drivetrain and eliminate the noise.
I'd check your vac at the hubs , most likely your losing vac and it then tries to engage your hubs into the locked position, pull your vac hoses at the hubs and look for water the 04 f150s were bad about that so just like jdecker said iwe or the solenoid
when in 2wd the vac is used to disengage your hubs that is why when in 4wd there is no problem the hubs are already engaged
Thank you. I'm going to get the solenoid tomorrow. But I should check the vac lines for water too. Is there a schematic or some pictures to locate where the vac lines attach to the hubs? Or do I just follow the vac lines down from the solenoid to the hubs?
OK, if I follow the vac lines from the IWE solenoid to the hubs, I see a single line down to a "Y" one branch goes left the other goes right, from the "Y" there is a coupler and then a Siamese rubber hose which has one large and one small the large looks like the main vac line to the hub and the small just come back up and is connected to nothing on both sides, I'm guessing this is a vent?? There is also a small black plastic tube that runs from the top of the shaft housing somewhere and runs up a an electrical connection on both sides, not sure what it does.
My question is: Is the Siamese tube what I'm looking for to check for water? and do you know if the smaller rubber tube is a vent?
Sorry for the length of the post.
Thanks For all your help!
Just to update you, I rented/borrowed a vacuum pump from checker today, and tested all the components and found that the passenger side (which is where the noise was coming from) actuator would not hold any pressure. bummer. The drivers side pumped up great and held pressure for 15 minutes and never bled off. Passenger side I could not pump fast enough to get pressure before it bleed off! The vac reservoir, solenoid, check valve and lines all test perfect, so I got that going for me. I'm off to the dealer tomorrow to get a new actuator, I hope they don't rip my lips off on price!
Thanks again for your help!
