Hey Everyone, I have a 1999 F 350 7.3 4x2. Today I was pulling my say 5k car trailer up a steep hill for a few miles. It was a dirt road and I was going very slow. No shifting problems or anything. I did end up dropping it in first for the last stretch, because I really underestimated the hill. I got to the top and nice pink bubby tranny fluid was pouring out. I sent the crew to Wally World to grab more fluid to get me down the hill so AAA could tow me home. After the truck sat for a few hours there was only a little leak, then nothing. I added a few Quarts, and headed home checking it often. Nothing. Not a drop. What happened? Is there an overflow? I will change the fluid tomorrow, what should I run in it? Synthetic? the truck has 108000. thanks guys.
If you were going below 35 than there probly wasn't enough air flow to keep it cool. If im not mistaken, your trans cooler lines might not run through your radiator so you don't get the extra cooling there. Synthetic is good but you still need to keep it cool.
I double towed my 5th wheel and utility trailer with a Polaris Ranger up a steep grade and then up and down a dirt road at low speed until I got to camp. My needle hit the red and temp stayed up for a bit. Just change out the fluid and hope all is good. Have not had a problem after 2 years.
Heated mine to what you are describing about 10,000 miles ago, did as has been suggested, flushed and put in new fluid. Installed a Factory Tech VB at the same time, no trouble since. Good luck.
Edit: Buy a case, you will need about 18 or 19 if you do a complete flush.
Edit: slow typing
