I think my alternator is going again. I just repleced it a little over two years ago. Has anyone else had this problem on an 02 7.3L? I alos replaced the batteries at the same time thinking they were the cause. Anyone have any suggestions, thanks in advance.
my 03 had both go at the same time, and the batteries to boot
actually what the mechanic thought was that one alt went first, then the other was trying to charge both batteries and burnt out then both batteries went running the truck by themselves
they replaced one alt only at first then it burned out because they didn't check the other one (that was dead also) so they replaced both (3 in one job) and I asked what about my batteries, they tried to tell me they weren't covered they are maintenance, I said BS, they failed because of a failure of a covered part under warranty, they agreed and I got two new batteries out of it also (sometimes it really pays to have worked at a dealership in your lifetime at some point)
my best advice for you would be to see if there is a better ALT on the marker then FORD parts, you may find an aftermarket for both cheaper and better, and with the 7.3 if one goes the other is working overtime and probably needs to be replaced also, at least that was my experience.
Well it wouldn't start about and hour and a half ago but I just went out there a few minutes ago and it started right up. WFT! This truck is pissing me off! I am ready to get rid of it and get something newer.
I am on alternator #5 on my 2002 7.3 EX. After the first was replaced by Ford under warranty I have purchased the remainder at Auto Zone. The lifetime warranty is great. Now that I have practiced the procedure a few times I swapped the last one out in the Auto Zone parking lot in 10 minutes flat.
Go with a DB electrical alternator, 200 Amp output and same price as aftermarket replacement. and never shop at auto zone else you will go through 4 alternators like Aeronaut. Duralast are purely the lowest bid parts and you never really know what you are getting... the company providing the part could be different every couplle months.... DB Electrical
is this "high-failure-rate-of-alternators" issue something just limited to the diesels, or is this something we V-10 drivers have to look foward to. At what mileage do the failures start occuring (my '05 has 32,000 mi. now )

x2...a 10 min swap and well worth it for the upgrade at the same cost...
