Hey guys, i have a 2000 F350, 7.3. Its got DP_Tuner, ITP fuel setup with adjustable pressure, straight piped, and a DIY air filter. Problem is my truck does not want to start when cold. I have to try for almost 20min. It wasnt that big of a deal because i live in FL but with the colder weather it almost kills my batts before it fires. And now i have to go to Wyoming in a few weeks, it will never start there. What is the sensor on the intake, mine is broke. Its in the middle towards the back.
First check your GPR (glow plug relay) There's 2 large posts on the relay.
The one under the rubber boot should show 12 volts at all times. The other large post should only show power right after the key is turned on for up to 120 seconds depending on the temps. If there's no power on the 2nd large post, hold a screwdriver across the 2 large posts for 30 seconds and then try to start the truck.
To check your glow plugs, disconnect the flat connector at the center of each inboard head. You'll see 9 flat pins inside there. Grab an ohm meter and check the forward two pins and the rear two pins against battery ground. A reading of less than 2 ohms indicates a good glow plug.
Hi, I know from experience that in FL you don't use the glow plugs much. But here in Colorado, they are needed almost every day. I have replaced the glow plug relay twice since 2004. Each time it has corrected the problem. Its easy to troubleshoot, I don't short the terminals, if I don't have 12 volts on the output, it isn't working. My question is "why does it keep failing?". Is the relay under rated or is there a problem with the glow plugs? At any rate check your relay, you'll need glow plugs in Wyoming!
