Fellas,
the big bowl on the intake, why is it there? the big plate in front of the filter, why is it there? Is this more of the ford way of keeping these diesels choked like the pre powerstroke turbo downpipe? Anyone cut these components out? Thanks!
CUT IT OUT TONIGHT what are you doing with it still in there it is a noise and speed and power and milage reducer. Its only purpose is a noise reducer like these motors are quiet lol. The big plate if you are talking about on the core support is actually to block water but it helps air flow if it is gone too.
cutting! haha, yeah that plate cracks me up. WTF? haha like i go surfing in the truck? Wouldnt water go around that thing after hitting it and just do the same thing?
Yep in 83 about two weeks after these motors hit our dealer a friend of mine went through some deep water and bent every rod in it. He hadn't even made the first payment. I think there is suppose to be a fine for having the soupbowl in 24 hours after taking possession of one of these trucks. lol
As for removing the bowl ... You can use a saw, a torch, a cutoff wheel or a hammer and chisel on the spot welds ... If you use the hammer and chisel be sure to have plenty of JB Weld on hand for the holes ... (now how would I know that) ...
Oh noes, here they go again hammering and chiseling stuff and reinventing the wheel! While you can certainly do so, there's a much easier way of taking care of that business - some 6.9 engines had no soup bowl on the lids, instead they restricted airflow by utilizing a reducer in the bottom of the air box where it meets the intake plenum. My friend's '86 F250 was like that, I've seen it on vans as well (likely to facilitate air cleaner replacement). So what we did was put a bowl-less 6.9 lid on my 7.3 air box, and also keep his bowl-less 6.9 lid but lose the restricted 6.9 box and replace it with a 7.3 box with the big opening on the bottom. Now both of our trucks have no silencers or restrictors of any kind, and there was no metal work involved in achieving this.
awesome idea that i heard awhile back, i just cant seem to find any of them anywhere. I had thought about getting a k&n filter top(the lid filters that increase flow) but it would probably pull in too much hot air.
turbo is just too much right now, simply because it is not just a turbo, it is the head studs, exhaust, possibly new head gasket, new injectors, etc etc etc. It is a lot of up front. Either way i chopped the bowl off, removed the plate inside the base and oh my friggin throttle response. Wow. It sounds like it is rumbling death!!!!!!!!!! The throaty noise is out of control! haha. I am off to get my exhaust pieces for the reroute!! weeeee i am excited!
woooooohooooo did i ever. I am posting up what i did picture wise in just a sec along with another thread on cutting almost 9 feet of exhaust and muffler out. Man i love my new toy!!!! Took it on a test drive and i have massive low end torque differences along with top end. Damn and it sounds soooooo good too. I cant believe how good it sounds straight piped!
