I'm telling you if the intake and exhaust is right there is nothing wrong with these na rigs.
When I dualled my first one it was 3 in straight pipes and it had a sweet rumble until it was loaded and you hit a certain rpm then it was like an explosion.
I pretty much guarantee you will be pleased with your mileage increase too.

I haven't done this yet on our 85 junker we picked up a month ago. I have sure read about it enough times to know that I need to, I will tomorrow.

I have seen all sorts of methods for getting some more air upfront as well, but I don't really have the tools to modify the radiator support to make a bigger intake hole.

Does that make taking the soup bowl out worthless?

No take it out even if you have no other mods these motors are starved for air.

sweet! best way is right above the lip, cut it, then grind the remaining lip down flat to the base. You will see when you start. I thought it was a piece of cake but it is thick so be prepared.

Thx for the advice. If it gives me any trouble I will take it to work and introduce it to the plasma cutter!

4" angle grinder made short work of that job
It sure changed the sound... now to start fabbing parts for an upgraded ram air system. And next week I am taking it to a buddy to see about dual exhaust with flowmasters.

Don't forget that plate on the bottom part of the air cleaner!
I enjoyed throwing mine out in the scrap pile.

What plate? Is it the metal round screen thing that is bolted onto the vehicle or on the airbox itself?

I cut my soupbowl out today just to follow the crowd
