Year to year differences.

I've been looking for an OBS PSD truck. I originally was only looking at '97s as I thought they were supposed to be the best. After more research it seems like only the 97s built in cali had more power because they use 120cc split injectors vs 90cc single injectors, also read they have more emissions crapola. I think I'd rather have a non cali truck and later down the road I can always put larger single shot injectors.

So can anyone tell me what, if any differences there are between a 94' truck and a '97 and any changes in between.

Thanks.

The 97 has a 120v IDM, but you can mod any of em to be 140v.

the '97 trucks actually did have a whole whopping 10 more hp than the '94.5s and '95s. can't remember if the '96 was 215hp or 225hp. doesn't matter either way though. a set of aftermarket injectors, chip, 140v IDM and some other little mods puts us wayy past the SD trucks so either way your good if you find a truck you like

I prefer the '96-'97 because of the little things. The HPO drins back differently. Computers are a bit different, not much. Several other things.
But in all if I found a nice '94 or '95 that stuff wouldn't stop me from buying it.

my 97 didn't have a 120 volt IDm. It's the same as the 94.

The only visible difference on the two engines are the oil temp sensor and plug on the harness for it.
I know the pcm is different too and am about to find out how much by swapping them.

its so easy now to work around the earlier trucks i don't think it makes much difference aside from personal preference. aftermarket HPOPs all have the option of having the check valve in the HPOP now, but still only one way to put in a 17* and thats to get TE to mod one. other disadvantages of the '94.5 and '95 is that multiple things are more expensive for them. IPRs are more expensive, but i'm using one for an E99 right now. throttle pedals are $800 compared to $500(those #'s may be off a bit). the early trucks didn't have a recall on the CPS for some reason and they don't use the grey CPS for them. they use a black CPS? mine has a '97 CPS in there right now and causes a rough idle. PCM is a bit different, but i thought it was just the programming? if thats the case chips even the playing field there. its easier to service the "other" screen on the FPR on the early trucks though. on the '96 and '97 they have a snap ring and plug you have to take off and the "screen" looks like they shoved a piece of steel wool or something in there. oh yeah and the early trucks had a rubber line running from the fuel bowl to FPR. the later trucks used a steel line that pushes in and holds with an o-ring. other than that isn't everything the same??

'96 and '97 are OBDII compliant. That's a biggie for me. Are the older ones as well??

some if not all of the '94's had leftover IDI radiators. also the core support is 3 inches shorter to match the idi radiator.

My 95 is also OBDII.

Like Travis said, after a couple of mods, they are about the same.

ALL '94's have the IDI radiators, plus the early '95's do too.

Mine has the IDI radiator, but I've never had problems with overheating so I don't know if it matters.

stewart, if your truck is a california model truck then it has 120cc injectors, but if its just a 50state truck then it has the crappy 90cc injectors
