Hope someone can help im looking to buy an 87 F-250 6.9L Diesel and im told that it needs a fuel pump which is mechanical and it is on the block. My question is parts related. The truck will run on ether so its obviously not getting fuel, is it the fuel pump or could it be the fuel injection pump? or Both? I dont know much about diesel motors and is there a way to test to make sure which is bad bec i do not want to spend the $800 on the injector pump if i dont have to
thanks
nick
It could be either one. You can test for fuel at the schrader valve to see if the fuel pump is working. If its the fuel pump you can ditch it for a electric pump.
IPs can go bad. 87 was a good year for the 6.9. I know they didnt have very many problems and are a pretty easy motor to work on. BTW an IP for a 6.9 shouldnt be 800 bucks.
IP's, injectors and any other mechanical parts wear, these are not known for wearing prematurely. The 6.9s are some of the easiest motors to work on. Diesels are easier than gas.
All you are testing at the schrader at will be air if it doesn't start and the lift pump and you want to disable the IP to do a pressure and volume test. 4# pressure and 1/3 pint with 10 seconds cranking. Again this test is for lift pump not the IP.
Starmilt, im having some trouble following what you mean. I should check to see if i get fuel to the schrader first correct? bec if not then it would need a pump
Ok sorry I went back and read the original post.
First make sure there is plenty fuel inthe tank the pickup in the tank has been known to come off and lets them run out of fuel with 1/3 tank still in it, and the guage can also be wrong. I like to put 5 gallons in each tank to be sure there is fuel available to the pump.
#2 depress the schrader valve and see if straight fuel comes out or any fuel comes out or if fuel spurts with air in it. It has to be a clean steady supply of fuel with no air.
#3 if no fuel at first remove the filter and fill with clean dieselI would install a new filter at this time I use diesel additive instead of diesel. and try again it should be spurting fuel quick it doesn't take much pressure but you can now test it.
Caution this must be done with batteries fully chargedand never crank on the starter over 20 seconds then give it 2 minutes to cool down.
CAUTION if you are using either to start it disable your glowplugs it is possible for a glow plug to come on at the wrong position of a piston and that is bad with either in the cyl.
Can you elaborate on what the symptoms were that they determned it needed a pump.
Like i wrote in the orig post im looking to buy it and im only going by what i was told i havent looked at it yet but im trying to get an idea as to where i stand when i go to look at it all i know is i was told the pump is bad and that it will run on ether but shuts off as soon as you stop spraying
