I have a 2000 F350 with esof. Last weekend I drove out of state to go hunting, went to launch the boat, and the 4X4 light would not come on.
I have been reading posts here all week, and decided to have a large well known local diesel shop do the warn conversion for me.
The owner of the shop told me the stock hubs are either auto, or manual locking. And I don't need warn hubs. He also said a vacuum leak will not have any effect on the 4X4 light (transfer case) not engaging.
Does this guy know what he is talking about? or am I misunderstanding the posts I have read here?
If it's a vacuum leak ONLY, then your 4x4 light should come on but the hubs not engage. With the light not working, I think it's electrical: fuse, relay, or possibly the motor in the transfer case.
Have you checked all your fuses?
Have you checked/swapped in a known good relay?
The owner of that shop sounds like a stand-up guy. He could easily have taken your money but didn't. Sounds like he might have done you a huge service.
i agree w/Brendan--i also wouldnt be opposed (if ya got it back home) to smack the shift motor w/a block of wood (dont try to knock it off) it might be frozen up internally--lack of use??
I just replaced my vacuum lines and serviced my hubs. Prior to that the 4wd light would come on but after neutral and then drive the 4 low light would not. After replacing the lines 4 low worked with the light...the lines in the wheel wells are a great place to start and are only about $6 for 9 ft (I like having extra at the house) you can't go wrong...

Yes I have checked the fuses and relays. Is the shift motor on the outside of the t-case?
You should have a code, I'm betting a P1865. Anyway, pull the code and follow the flowchart for it in this doc, it could also be the 4WD control module...
