pinion???

hey guys......i was on ebay during the xmas season looking for 3.55 gears and i noticed that the length of the pinion shafts were different. some were long and some were short. i was thinking why this was. i wanted to purchase gears this holiday season and did not do it when i saw this. does anyone know why its different?? was looking for the 8.8 ring and pinion. is it different from car to truck?? its going on a 94 f150 2wd. when i had emailed the different sellers through ebay they all said it did not matter and it would fit. i wanted to ask you guys this question before making a purchase and would not be able to return it to the seller............thanks for the feed back guys.................

it depends on the housing like dana 30 or 8.8 and so on....

i wouldnt think they would make 2 different legths for a 8.8 inch for a truck and a 8.8 for a car

I am fairly certain that 8.8 ring and pinion gears are interchangable between all 8.8 diffs. I know that you can use Mustang, Explorer, etc gears in our trucks. I have never heard of there being any difference. Its possible that maybe different bearings are needed though.

Actually, the carriers are the same but the side gears are different, with the exception of there being an old style and a new style carrier.

Just meant the carrier will swap IF you change the side gears (the splined gears that the axles go into). Had a pinion nut come loose on mine which resulted in a cracked carrier but it didn't hurt the spider gears. Ended up getting a 28 spline carrier for free and swapped out the gears, making it a 31 spline.
