When I am driving up a hill and therefore putting a little strain on the engine the air that is blowing through the vents starts coming only out of the defrosters. As soon as I let off the gas the air comes back through the vents as normal.
Works fine while driving about town, only happens when I am going up a hill. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I read (possibly elsewhere) that the vaccuum canister on a few models had weak welds and therefore is not putting the suction onto the door mechanism that it should (loosing vaccuum in the weak welds). The weight of the door is probably causing it to fall open on an incline. This is exactly what the last post I saw was experiencing. I also read that Ford fixed it, knowing of the problem. Not sure if there is an FSB or not.
I just had the same problem with a 97 F150 I bought. The service advisor that I talked to recommended a check valve replacement that may sometimes go bad. It was about a $14 part, unfortunately it didn't fix the problem. The vacuum canister was the culprit. It was broken. The vacuum canister for the ac is hooked to the back side of the battery tray. Remove the battery and unbolt the battery tray. As you're pulling the battery tray out, the vacuum canister is a more or less rectangular black box that clips onto the back side of the battery tray. Make sure it is not cracked, and that no hoses going to it are cracked, disconnected, or having other problems. My canister was cracked, but instead of replacing it, I simply used some black silicone "The Right Stuff", and siliconed over the hole. It's still working great. Good luck.
Thanks so much for all of your posts! Just got back from vacation and it didn't do it at all. But I will be looking at the vacuum canister. Thanks Again!
