Guys, the hose from the PCV valve to the throttle body has a foam type insulation/cover over it, or at least I'm assuming that's not the actual hose. It's crumbling and disinegrating. What's the purpose of the insulation? Do I need to replace it. I thought I might replace the entire PCV line per Krewat's suggestion and see if the P0171 code is eliminated. Can I just replace the rubber elbows with emission/fuel line?
It's probably to keep evaporated oil/solvents from condensing in the pipe and running back into the engine, or running as liquid into the throttle body.
If you're in a warm climate, I can't see it being a big problem. You could probably just wrap it with foil tape and be done with it.
Me, I don't think I ever said replace the entire line, but do check the rubber elbow where it meets the throttle body.
No, you didn't say replace the whole line. I was thinking that since there are two elbows and a fitting in addition to the actual rubber hose/line, that it might be more cost effective, and less likely to leak, if I replaced the entire length of line and fittings with one line and one fitting.
Mine had that covering too. I think it is insulation from engine heat so as not to cook the hose and make it crispy over time. I replaced the hose with some stiff 3/8 hose. Some hoses seemed to soft for my liking when I was looking. As long as it is rated for PCV you should be OK.
I just bought a replacement hose from Ford. It too had the foam covering that you mentioned. I assume it is an upgrade to minimize the impact of heat and rubbing on other hoses. The problem I have is that this hose has a number of elbow joints and a large connector the diameter of a quarter for connection to the throttle body. My X has only a straight hose connection and no foam covering. Do you think they merely clip the elbows and connector and direct connect the remaining hose for a 2000 Ex V10?
I just bought some emissions hose the same diameter as the original hose from Autozone. I slipped some hot water piping foam over the emissions hose to serve as insulation. The elbow fittings looked fine with no cracking so I reused them. They are a slip fit into the emissions hose and throttle body.
No change to the engine trouble codes, so I'll keep looking.
