The torque converter will take about 8 quarts or so. You're not going to put ATF in the converter before installing it on the trans, are you? That will just make a mess and you'll lose a lot of fluid.
Once the trans is back in the truck put 8 quarts in the trans and run the engine for one minute, then shut it off. Put another 5 quarts in and run the engine for another minute and check the level. The dipstick will be hard to read at this point from the ATF in the tube. Add another quart if there is nothing on the dipstick. Repeat until you get a reading, but leave it pretty low at this point. Warm the trans up and set the level in the cross hatch area.
