Starter problem

Long story short cause of winter and stpid running out of fuel I over heated my starter, and it won't crank unless you smack it with a hammer, and I want to know what causes that problem, cause I have taken starters appart and refurbished them, and all that fun stuff. But that was using known good parts, to make one run, not repairing one, not knowing whats wrong, so all the info would help, like to get the stroke back up and running soon, and can you drop the starter just being under the truck? Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

Bendix is probably fried/stuck, starters can easily be dropped under the truck, 3 bolts, ones a SOB but it'll come out with a stubby wrench or a couple universals. I'd just replace it, cheaper probably in the long run, lot of us here are running the DB hi torque gear starter....DB Electrical Starter-Alternator

Yea. just go with the DB High Torque.

Solve all your problems in one fell swoop.

It's massive, and starts the truck way better.
Took 2 of us to get it in last winter to Ron's truck. I posted pictures of it on here.

A while back (years) there was a thread that on the back (inside) of the starter there is a ground contact, probably brush(s) or if I remember right just contacts.? According to this guy just get in there and clean up the contacts. Never tore one apart so can't confirm that. If you have the knowledge to do so give it a try and if it works report back, please.

I will report back and try this, I have torn starters down, mainly tractor starters, and you guys forget I am a POOR YOUNG MAN, so take a community collection and buy me a new starter if you think I should get a new one, but Hussler, I will report back to you.

I had no problem reaching the "hard to reach upper bolt". I just used a long and a short extension, and I was even able to finger start it putting it back in.
