Just wondering what the weight of a C6 or ZF-542 is??? I have work to do on a C6, C4, and ZF? All 3 are 4x4's, can I drop tranny and t-case together? I was going to buy a good tranny jack but can't bring myself to spend $150 or more for the 5 times I am going to use it. $75 for the 400lb one at Harbor Freight. I have a 3 ton floor jack that I have used in the past but it is wobbly without a flat top and strap. I'll just hurt myself if I use the floor jack. Looked at the $50 attachments for the floor jack but don't have the hole on the jack to mount it to. Any suggestions on what you guys have done in the past to not need a tranny jack??? Also I need to pull a i6 and 5.8. Are there any alternatives to buying a engine hoist (agian $200 for the 3 times I'll use it...)??? Let me know any tips and tricks you guys have used or a cheaper way to pulling engines and trannys. I'd rather put the money in the motors and not the tools.
Why not just rent a tranny jack and engine hoist for when you need them? Most equipment rental places will have them for rent. I don't know what they rent for these days but it may be enough that renting them for 2-3 times will be about the same as just buying one.
yeah I checked into that too... it was $60 for the pair for one day... I would need to rent them for at least 3 days. That would pay for the engine hoist. I do have a mig welder and have some scrap metal out back... Thinking of making my own attachment for the 3 ton jack. I was also thinking of using a chain hoist attached to the garage ceiling to pull the engine. I have 9 ft ceilings in the garage and the chain hoist will hang 1ft down and the front end of my truck (F-250) is at least 3.5-4 feet high. not sure that is enough room to get a 351w out...
Has anyone else used a chain hoist like the one below to get an engine out? Does iit work out just as good as a hoist???
Make sure your ceiling joists are of sufficiant size to support the weight in one small spot. I am a framer and will say that most times houses are stretching the code. Using the bare minimum that is needed. Buy the engine hoist. You can use them for alot more than pulling engines. I tend to work alone and that hoist comes in real handy. Use mine to pull beds off, unload heavy rearends/tranny's from truck, and so on.
Thanks 79Ford4x4... I didn't think of the other applications I could use the hoist for. The lil' lady doesn't like me dropping $300-$400 on tools right now (esp. with hard $$$ times) but she can see the benefit in fixing the truck (thus the reason I am hesitant to buy them). Just got a Hobart mig and she about blew a gasket when she found out i spent $550 on it... Can't win them all! LOL...
How do you attach the hoist to the truck beds to lift them off????
Oh and does any one know about the tranny weights??? I was considering the 400lb one from harbor freight... Just don't want to overload it...
There is a guy at RamchargerCentral.Com - RamchargerCentral.Com - Index which is another forum I frequent that uses his engine hoist to pull cabs off of trucks he is parting out. He used his welder to build a frame that bolts to the floor and hooks his hoist to it and lifts. He also pulls beds off to part or change fuel pumps with it.
The 400 pound tranny jack at Harbor Frieght should work fine. I wouldn't try a tranny and transfer together but none of them weigh that much individually.
I'm in the middle of replacing the old tired truck 5.0 with my old Mustang 5.0HO and what I did was unbolt the transfer case and pull it out first by hand then pull the engine and trans together. The transfer case (BW1356) isn't that heavy compared to the transmission and is easily managable to align by hand. I have the M5OD and it's a bit heavier than I thought it would be.
In short I leave the trans bolted to the engine and install all at once and then just use a floor jack to help install the transfer case. Actually I just use the floor jack to get it close then just lift it to aling to the back of the trans.
Here's a pic of mine getting ready to drop in tomorrow.............
yeah I have got the t-case out without a hitch last night and most of the tranny cross support bolts are loose... I made a plate for my floor jack and am probably going to drop the tranny tonight. I wanted to drop them seperate so I only have one or two things to work on at once. I'll get the seals replaced in the tranny and t-case, and then I'll pull the engine. Hopefully between now and then I can find a used engine hoist on craigslist...
So I have the C6 out and on the bench with the Borg Warner 1345 T-case. After looking around a while on the internet I found, ordered and watched a C6 rebuild video from Ken at www.badshoeproductions.com
I am about to start my tear down but it seems like Ken covered everything except pulling and re-installing the transmission! I feel confident enough that I am going to try and rebuild the C6 myself! After that I will be getting to my 351w that needs a rebuild as well. Looking at maybe getting the rebuild engine DVD on ebay... I am a visual learner so seeing it done helps me tremendously! Has anyone seen the DVD below???
