Those look great! I did the same thing - Masonite 1/4 inch! I haven't covered mine yet though.
I used 1/4 inch luaun plywood, Had to add a tapered strip on the front at the bottom coming up the side to fill the gap. Need to put screws in to hold it. Started to use carpet but changed my mind. Am I allowed to do that?????
I started out the same as you, but switched to 1/16" aluminum due to the weight of the speakers, and concerns with mounting them to the plywood. Depends how heavy your speakers are.
Hardboard, ABS plastic, aluminum, 1/8" ply doorskin, upholstery board, even FG resin impregnated stretch fleece pulled over plywood forms will work if you want flowing shapes. I'd suggest putting a layer or two of polyfiber quilt filling (~1/2" thick fiberfill "blanket" sold at fabric shops and Wal mart) cut to the backing size to give the covering a pillowed padded look.
