Reverse problem

I have a 2004 F150 S crew 4x4. I have several questions. A couple weeks ago, backing up, I heard and felt a clunk and then the engine revved. I stopped. Put in drive, all shifted and drove fine. After that, I had no or I should say a very weak reverse. It's like it is revving but not completely engaging. Enough to move me on flat ground but definitely not on ANY slope. 4 low will move me backward. All forward gears shift through fine except when it is lugging a bit, it will seem like it has a miss. tune up has been done-it's not that. Oh, I have 200k miles-I drive it. 4 hi and low work fine.

1. ONe shop says it sounds like it needs a rebuild. A rebuilt Jasper tran. will be about $2800. Do I really have to go all in without inspecting first? or is that sort of how it goes. Once you open it, all the pieces fall out? Seems like something is missing. 3 year/100k mile warranty.

2. Shop 2 says they can inspect then rebuild as needed for the parts needed. First inspection will be about $600.00 then they will know for sure - exactly what's wrong.... 12 month/12k mile warranty.

Hard to know what route to take. Need my truck operational. I use it for work, daily.

Do you change your own tranny fluid or not? When was the last time your fluid changed? If you have never changed it, then start with a simple fluid change if you do the rubber hose thing as in another thread posted here then it is about a $50 investment. Tranny flush at a shop is about $150. That (and a few pressure tests) in all probability is what #2 is going to do for you, just at a premium. If it fails go for #1. #2 is just the way you labeled it to begin with.

I agree. If it's been a while since you flushed it I'd take it in for a good reverse flush and see if that clears up the problem.

Update time. New fluid, filters changed, a speed sensor cylinoid and another sensor replaced. NO change! none to little reverse. No metal in the fluid. Clutches slipping. New rebuilt tranny ordered.

Ford remanufactured with 100,000 mile warranty is only $1950 or $3000 installed with a new trans cooler. Does the jasper come with a warranty?

Thanks for the info on the Ford reman. The Jasper does come with a warranty. practically the same price as well. Right around 1900, labor comes to about 600 at the shop and then taxes bring it to right around 3000. The warranty is the same, 3 year/100k. All the updates to current are made.

New jasper transmission in. My truck is like new again. It had more problems than no reverse. Now that I am driving with it fixed I realize it was pretty weak in the upper gears going forward as well. Anyway....I'm 3k broker but I can back up again.

Same here. I now realized how much the trans was slipping in all gears. I would never know it until I drove my truck with the new one!
